WCIA’s Gee Corbett Village named Senior Center of Excellence

WCIA Certification Team

The Gee Corbett Village Senior Center has received certification as a Senior Center of Excellence from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Division of Aging and Adult Services.

Gee Corbett Village is operated by WCIA Inc., a Wilson nonprofit community development corporation that has been helping to improve the quality of life in Wilson County for over 40 years.

“We always knew that the Gee Corbett Village senior center was a great place to gather and participate in our many activities, as well as an excellent resource for other services,” said Barbara Blackston, executive director of WCIA. “Now it has been proven.”

The Senior Center of Excellence designation adds value to the center by heightening awareness of its activities and services and bringing pride to the community, center funders and participants. One of the many benefits is additional operating funds for Gee Corbett Village to offset some of the costs for program delivery.

“It proves that we are a viable, fundable and qualified provider of services within our community and we are thrilled by this honor,” said Blackston

The Center was commended for services such as its on-site housing counselors, annual emergency preparedness event and Medicaid assistance.

Gee Corbett Village is operated with the support and collaboration of local government agencies, the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Government, Department of Social Services, N.C. Agricultural Extension Agency, the Health Department, churches, schools, local businesses and other agencies.
